Jesus also says that we ought to strive to enter through the narrow door. That we should work to merit the kingdom, even though we know that it is only through his grace that we can actually enter through any door, narrow or wide.  It’s like St. Ignatius said, “Work as if everything depended on you, pray as if everything depended on God.”
