Australia has banned the Islamic group Hizb ut-Tahrir under new federal hate laws, making it a criminal offence to be a member of or support the organisation. The ban, effective immediately, carries jail terms of up to 15 years and follows a recommendation from ASIO in the wake of the Bondi terror attack. Civil liberty groups have warned the ban faces potential legal challenge in the High Court over concerns about the definition of hate groups.
