Australian submariners on US vessel that sank Iranian frigate

Listen Later

Three Australian submariners were on board the USS Charlotte when it sank the Iranian frigate Dena in the Indian Ocean, killing 87 sailors with 32 survivors. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed the personnel were conducting AUKUS training, drawing criticism from the Greens and former Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon for breaking convention and potentially risking military safety. The United States has promised further strikes against Iran's navy, marking the first time America has sunk a ship since World War II.
