My author interview with portal fantasy writer Stephanie DosSantos was fascinating, as we discussed Caribbean folklore in our Writers on Their Writing Process series. We explored storybook and folklore retellings, focusing on her portal fantasy series, Talin and the Tree, which draws heavily from Caribbean folklore.
Stephanie’s book, Talin and the Tree, follows Talin, a bullied outcast who stumbles upon a portal hidden within the island's sacred tree. He is unexpectedly chosen to become the island’s next Healer, a title long vacant and fiercely contested by his rival. Only one can claim this legendary role, and Talin must decide whether to embrace his destiny or let it fall into the wrong hands.
