Autism: What Australian GPs Need to Know in 2024

Listen Later

More than 3% of Australian children have Autism Spectrum Disorder, which is one of the highest rates in the world. Prof Cheryl Dissanayake AM, one of Australia’s leading experts, will describe what the early signs and red flags are in very young children and what the appropriate, most practical referral pathway is for expert assessment. Children with this condition can often also have other comorbidities such as anxiety, ADHD and depression, which often the GP may be called upon to treat. Prof Dissanayake will dispel some of the common misperceptions and also address the way in which changes to the NDIS might change the kinds of pressure that parents and carers may put on GPs.
