Good morning! I'm Aaron Jolly. And welcome to the Utah Weather Podcast — it's Monday, February 23rd.
Utah's putting on a show today. Three regions, three completely different vibes. The Wasatch Front gets spring. Southern Utah gets summer. And the mountains? They're still clinging to winter.
Let's start along the Wasatch Front. You're waking up to 34 degrees, but watch what happens. By 3 P.M., you'll hit 56.. Nearly 25 degrees above normal for late February. Winds stay light, shifting southeast to south around 11 A.M. At just 5 miles an hour. Tonight, clouds roll in. There's a slight chance of rain after 5 A.M. Lows drop to 39 degrees.
Now drive south and things heat up fast. Southern Utah wakes up to 36 degrees but climbs to 67 by 4 P.M. That's summer weather, folks. Winds stay gentle, shifting northeast to east around 2 P.M. Tonight stays mostly clear, with lows near 41 degrees. It's the kind of day where you forget winter exists.
Up in the mountains, winter's not done yet. You'll start at 26 degrees.. Feeling more like 20 with the wind. You'll climb to 47 by afternoon, but winds pick up from the south-southwest around 5 P.M. Tonight brings a chance of light snow after 5 A.M., with lows near 30 degrees. Skiers, this could be your last fresh dusting for a while.
Here's the plot twist. A storm system arrives Tuesday. Rain moves into northern Utah, turning to thunderstorms Wednesday. Snow levels drop to 5,500 to 6,500 feet in the mountains. Southern Utah stays dry and warm through Thursday.. Highs near 70. Then a slight cooldown over the weekend. High pressure returns Thursday and Friday, bringing sunny skies and highs back into the 50s and 60s.
One critical note. The Utah Avalanche Center warns of high danger in the backcountry through today. Two fatalities this week prove how volatile conditions are. Check utahavalanchecenter.org before you head out.
That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow.
