Avalanche Survival: A Comprehensive Guide to Safety

Listen Later

This article provides instructions on how to survive an avalanche, with advice from survival expert Ky Furneaux.Key steps to take during and after an avalanche include:
  • Reacting in the first few seconds If an avalanche starts beneath your feet, jump up the slope. Move to the side of the avalanche as quickly as possible. Let go of heavy equipment, but keep your backpack to protect your neck and back. If unable to escape, hold onto a boulder or sturdy tree. Start swimming to stay near the surface of the snow.
  • Surviving if buried in snow Hold one arm straight above your head to figure out which way is up and help rescuers locate you. Dig a pocket around your face to create an air pocket, and conserve air and energy. If you hear people nearby, try to call out to them.
  • Increasing chances of survival Always take survival equipment, including an avalanche receiver and probe, a small shovel, and a helmet. Airbags can also help you stay toward the surface of the snow. Take an avalanche training course to learn how to avoid avalanches, save yourself, and rescue others.
  • Additional tips If you feel like urinating, do so as rescue dogs rely on smell to locate victims. If buried in a remote area, try to dig toward any light you see or in the direction your breath rises. Always wear a helmet when skiing, snowboarding, or hiking on a mountain.
  • Warning Once caught in an avalanche, survival mainly comes down to luck. The only sure way to survive is to avoid one altogether.
