"Avoidance Situation" by James McConnell is a story about facing fears, avoiding accountability, misjudging others, and hiding from your troubles, all while exploring space. The crew of the Sunward encounter a representative from an advanced civilization who informs them that they are the only other political empire in the entire galaxy.
