AxWax - That Echo Track (aka PT2399 MIDI Delay Jam)

Listen Later

Just a little DAWless Tech/House/Trance live jam to test out my new homemade delay (cardboard) box, featuring Elektron Model:Samples, Behringer TD-3 & RD-6 and Korg MS-10.

===========================

Gear Used:
Elektron Model:Samples: 909-ish beat, "bass" & stab
Behringer RD-6: More beats plus help keeping the MS-10 in check
Korg MS-10: A lttle bit of additional bass
Behringer TD-3: bleepy bloops
Sequential Circuits Sixtrak: swooshie synth strings
Yamaha E1010 Analog Delay: extra delay duties on the SixTrak

===========================

Setup:
My homemade delay is connected to the TD-3, and the Sequential Circuits Sixtrak is running through my trusty, but a little scratchy Yamaha E1010 (with the dry and wet output panned slightly left and right).

The low tom trigger out on my RD-6 is connected to the gate in on my MS-10 for the staccato bass in the second main section.

===========================

Background:
I finally got a first prototype of a MIDI-controlled Delay unit working, using an Arduino and a PT2399-based digital delay board that's all over AliExpress.

The project is just a mashup of several tutorials I found online:

  • The most crucial one is "MIDI synchronized echo with PT2399" by DZL:
  • http://blog.dzl.dk/2018/03/20/midi-synchronized-echo-with-pt2399/
  • The MIDI input circuit is based on the trusty "MIDI for the Arduino" tutorial by the excellent Notes and Volts:
  • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxfHijjn0ZM
  • Finally, Dud on the LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER forum posted a great list of mods for the module, of which I implemented a bunch:
  • https://lookmumnocomputer.discourse.group/t/cheap-pt2399-reverb-delay-module-diy/801

    ===========================

    You can hear the delay in action on its own (using my trusty Grandstand Talking Computer as sound source) here:

    ===========================

    There's still a lot on my wishlist for future versions:

    • A wet and dry output
    • Stereo delay using a second PT2399 module
    • Control of the MIDI delay interval, either on the unit itself, or via MIDI CC
    • possibly some sort of display
    • a tap function when in manual mode
    • I'll try and get some build instructions written up in the near future if there is interest...
