The Hero Show

Ayn Rand: Literary and Philosophic Revolutionary

Listen Later

Ayn Rand escaped the communism of Soviet Russia in her early twenties, came to the United States, and built a career for herself as the bestselling author of The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. She developed the philosophy of Objectivism, which she said, “in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.” Objectivism answered longstanding philosophic questions, clarifying the connection between facts and values; demonstrating the objective nature of the senses, concepts, and knowledge; and offering a rational alternative to pervasive mysticism and skepticism. Her novels, which portrayed men overcoming great obstacles to achieve ambitious goals, have impacted the lives of millions and continue to sell hundreds of thousands of copies each year.
