Episode 4: Learning to See Through the Lens of Ayurveda

What if you could look at your food — or even your entire day — through a completely different lens?

A cucumber becomes more than a vegetable. It's cool, crisp, and light.

Fresh ginger isn't simply a spice. It's warm, sharp, and dry.

And suddenly, instead of asking whether something is simply “healthy” or “unhealthy,” you begin asking a much more useful question:

What qualities are present here — and how are they affecting me?

In this episode of Ayurveda: One Bite at a Time, we're going deeper into the Gunas and exploring the 10 pairs of opposing qualities Ayurveda uses to describe everything from the food on your plate to the weather outside, your thoughts, your environment, and even the pace of your day.

Think of them as a new pair of glasses.

They don't necessarily change what you see.

They change how you see it.

    In this episode, we explore:

    • The 10 pairs of Gunas and why they're such an important part of Ayurvedic thinking
    • Heavy & Light — and how different foods can leave us feeling grounded, sluggish, clear, or light
    • Hot & Cold — and why neither is inherently “good” or “bad”
    • Oily & Dry — and how moisture and dryness show up in our food, environment, and bodies
    • Slow & Sharp — qualities that can calm or stimulate
    • Stable & Mobile — from stillness and movement in the physical world to the movement of our thoughts
    • Soft & Hard — and the different ways these qualities nourish and create structure
    • Clear & Sticky — qualities we can recognize in food and even our state of mind
    • Smooth & Rough — and how these qualities can extend beyond food into our bodies and relationships
    • Subtle & Dense — including what Ayurveda traditionally means by the word “gross”
    • Liquid & Solid — the final pair completing our Ayurvedic vocabulary
    • How to stop labeling choices as simply “good” or “bad” and begin noticing their texture, sensation, and effect
    • How to use opposing qualities to gently move yourself back toward balance

And here's the most important part:

You don't have to memorize all ten pairs.

The goal isn't to pass an Ayurveda vocabulary test.

The goal is to begin noticing.

Because once you can name a quality, you can begin to work with it.

    🍲 From My Kitchen

In this episode, I share a simple example from my own kitchen.

After a rushed, scattered day filled with a little too much coffee and scrolling, I noticed that my mind felt fast, dry, and mobile.

Rather than adding more of those same qualities, I chose something different: soup.

    Warm instead of cold.
    Soft instead of crunchy.
    Liquid instead of dense.
Slow to cook and slow to eat.

Little by little, my body began to feel like the meal itself:

    Settled. Soft. Calm.

    That's the practice.

    Not another wellness rulebook.

A conversation between what you're carrying and what you choose next.

    🍃 The Small Bite

This week, choose one single food.

Not an entire meal. Just one food you already eat — your morning banana, a handful of almonds, an apple, your afternoon snack, or the soup you're having for dinner.

Before you eat it, really look at it.

    Ask yourself:

    Is it heavy or light?
    Hot or cold?
    Oily or dry?
    Soft or hard?
    Stable or mobile?
    Clear or sticky?
    Liquid or solid?

You don't need to identify every quality. Two or three is plenty.

Then take the experiment one step further:

Notice how that food actually feels once it's inside your body.

Does something you would describe as “light” still feel light an hour later?

Does something heavy make you feel grounded and satisfied — or does it sit like a rock?

    There is no right answer.

    You're learning to observe.

One food. A few qualities. Real attention. One bite at a time.

    Coming Next

In Episode 5, we're exploring one of my favorite concepts in Ayurveda:

    Agni — your digestive fire.

And digestion in Ayurveda means much more than what happens to your lunch.

We'll begin exploring how we digest food, thoughts, emotions, experiences, and even relationships — and what happens when we're able to transform what we take in versus when our bodies have to work harder to clear it.

As someone whose own healing journey began with digestive struggles, this conversation is especially personal, and I can't wait to share it with you.

Episode 3: What Are the Gunas? Learning the Language of Ayurveda

Have you ever walked into a quiet home and immediately felt yourself relax?

Or stepped into a busy airport and felt your whole nervous system shift before anything actually happened?

Ayurveda has a way of explaining why.

Every food, season, environment, activity, relationship — even every thought — carries certain qualities. And those qualities are constantly interacting with the qualities within us.

In Ayurveda, we have a word for them:

    Gunas.

But don't worry — this isn't the episode where I hand you a list of Sanskrit words to memorize!

A Guna is simply a quality or characteristic: warm, cool, heavy, light, dry, soft, sharp, slow, busy, peaceful.

    And here's the beautiful part:

    You already understand them.

You've been noticing qualities your entire life. Ayurveda simply gives you a language for what your body already knows.

    In this episode, we explore:

    • What the Sanskrit word Guna means
    • Why you don't need to memorize a complicated Ayurvedic vocabulary to begin
    • How qualities show up in food, weather, environments, activities, and everyday experiences
    • Why Ayurveda asks different questions than many of us are accustomed to asking
    • How the qualities outside of us interact with the qualities within us
    • Why nourishment includes much more than the food on our plates
    • How music, conversations, relationships, media, and the pace of our lives can influence our well-being
    • Why observation is one of the most powerful skills Ayurveda can teach us
    • How learning to recognize qualities helps us apply the principle from Episode 2: like increases like, and opposites create balance

Ayurveda isn't asking you to become a walking dictionary.

It's asking you to become an observer.

    Instead of simply asking:

    “Is this healthy?”

    We can begin asking:

    “What qualities are present here?”

    And then:

“How are those qualities affecting me?”

That small shift opens the door to a completely different relationship with wellness.

    Observation creates awareness.
    Awareness creates understanding.
    Understanding creates choice.
    And choice creates change.

    🍃 The Small Bite

This week, become a quiet observer.

Choose one ordinary part of your day — your breakfast, commute, afternoon walk, favorite chair, workspace, or evening routine.

    Pause and ask:

    What qualities are present here?

    Is it warm or cool?
    Quiet or noisy?
    Busy or peaceful?

    Then ask:

How do these qualities make me feel?

    That's it.

Don't change anything. Don't try to fix anything. Just notice.

The more you practice observing, the more naturally Ayurveda begins to unfold — one observation, one choice, one bite at a time.

    Coming Next

Now that we've started learning the language of qualities, it's time to put it into practice.

In Episode 4, we'll begin looking at the world through an Ayurvedic lens — from grocery stores and coffee shops to weather, social media, your workplace, relationships, and even your home.

Because once you learn to recognize qualities, you'll discover something wonderful:

    They're everywhere.

And gradually, you can begin making different choices — not because someone gave you another list of wellness rules, but because those choices simply begin to make sense.

Episode 2: The Principle That Changes Everything

What if one simple idea could change the way you think about food, stress, sleep, emotions — and even the way you respond to a chaotic weekend?

In this episode of Ayurveda: One Bite at a Time, we’re exploring what I believe is the single most important principle in Ayurveda:

    Like increases like.
    Opposites create balance.

It sounds almost too simple. But once you begin noticing this principle at work, you’ll start seeing it everywhere.

Think about coming inside after spending hours in the cold. Your body naturally reaches for warmth — a hot drink, a bowl of soup, a cozy blanket. You probably don't need an ancient wellness system to tell you that!

But Ayurveda teaches us to take that same instinctive wisdom and apply it to the rest of our lives.

What happens when your mind is already overstimulated and you add more stimulation?

When your schedule has been nonstop and you respond by pushing yourself even harder?

When anxiety makes you move faster, anger makes you speak more harshly, or loneliness causes you to withdraw?

Sometimes, without realizing it, we add more of the very quality that is already pulling us out of balance.

    Ayurveda gives us another option:

Notice what is present. Then ask what would bring balance.

    In this episode, we explore:

    • What “like increases like, and opposites create balance” actually means
    • Why this simple principle forms the foundation for so much of Ayurveda
    • How your body already instinctively understands balance
    • Why Ayurvedic wisdom extends far beyond food
    • How stimulation can create even more stimulation in an already-busy mind
    • What a hectic weekend can teach us about our actual needs
    • How the principle of opposites can show up in our emotional lives
    • Why Ayurveda teaches us how to think and observe, rather than giving us hundreds of rules to memorize
    • How to begin asking, “What do I need more of — and what do I need less of?”

This is where Ayurveda begins to become personal.

Instead of asking what diet everyone should follow or what wellness trend is supposedly best, we begin paying attention to the qualities that are present right now, in our own lives.

And over time, those observations become wisdom.

🍃 Your One Bite for the Week

Once or twice each day, pause and ask yourself:

What qualities am I experiencing right now?

    Then ask:

What might bring me back toward balance?

You don't have to fix anything.
You don't have to overhaul your routine.
You don't even have to know the Ayurvedic words for what you're noticing yet.

    For now, simply notice.

    Awareness is where Ayurveda begins.

    Coming Next

In Episode 3, we’ll give a name to some of the qualities you’re beginning to notice.

They’re called the Gunas, or qualities, and they give us a language for describing what we experience in our food, environment, habits, thoughts, and bodies.

And don't worry — there will be no vocabulary quiz! We'll learn them the same way we learn everything here:

One plain-language idea at a time.

Episode 1: What Is Ayurveda? (And Why It Matters)

If you’ve ever heard the word Ayurveda and thought, “I have absolutely no idea what that means” — this episode is for you.

Welcome to the very first episode of Ayurveda: One Bite at a Time, a podcast where ancient wisdom meets real, modern life — one bite, one habit, and one small shift at a time.

In this episode, I’m taking Ayurveda all the way back to the beginning. No Sanskrit dictionary required. No yoga experience necessary. And definitely no expectation that you already know your dosha.

We’ll explore what Ayurveda actually is, why this ancient system of wellness is still incredibly relevant thousands of years later, and how it invites us to stop looking at our health as a collection of separate symptoms and begin seeing the bigger picture.

I’ll also share a little of my own story — including how years of digestive struggles, surgeries, chronic pain, misdiagnoses, and searching for answers eventually led me to Ayurveda and changed the question I was asking about my body.

    Instead of asking:

    “What’s wrong with me?”

    Ayurveda taught me to ask:

“What is my body trying to tell me?”

And that one question changed everything.

    In this episode, we explore:

    • What the word Ayurveda actually means
    • How to pronounce it (you’ll have it down by the end!)
    • Why Ayurveda looks at food, sleep, stress, seasons, routines, and our environment as one connected picture
    • What makes Ayurveda different from a symptom-focused approach to wellness
    • The relationship between Ayurveda and Yoga — and why you absolutely do not need to practice yoga to benefit from Ayurveda
    • What Ayurveda is — and what it isn’t
    • Why Ayurveda is not a religion, fad diet, list of forbidden foods, or one-size-fits-all lifestyle
    • Why Ayurveda can work alongside modern medicine, rather than replacing it
    • How curiosity, observation, and small shifts can help us build a different relationship with our bodies

Most importantly, you’ll begin to discover that Ayurveda isn’t asking you to completely overhaul your life or become “perfect.”

It simply asks you to pay attention.

Because sometimes awareness is the first step toward change.

    Coming Next

In Episode 2, we’ll explore one of the simplest — and most powerful — principles in Ayurveda:

Like increases like, and opposites create balance.

Once you begin recognizing this principle, you’ll start seeing it everywhere: in your food, the weather, your routines, your emotions, your relationships, and your own body.
