B-Side K-Pop 064: You Makin' Me A Boy With Luv
We've seen a noticeable increase in collaborations between K-Pop and Western artists lately which is amazing! To see K-Pop's influence on today's music is insane and something I'd thought I'd never see. Thanks to the likes of BTS, Blackpink, and NCT 127, K-Pop has a bigger presence in the west than ever before. But let's not forget those who came before!
While mostly unsuccessful in terms of popularity or sheer impact, K-Pop artists have tried to break through to the West in the past. JYP made an impressive attempt, albeit a flop, to break the Wonder Girls into the American market in the late 00s/ early 2010s. And G-Dragon's unique appeal garnered the attention of western artists/producers like Diplo and Missy Elliott. This time period also came with a few collaborations that while significant, were ultimately kitschy in nature. No-one act seemed to really pop-off in a meaningful way in the West.
Now K-Pop is nearly inescapable in the U.S. and whether it's Coachella, the BBMAs, or Good Morning America, the presence is loud and clear. I don't know if K-Pop's sound has finally found a way to appeal to a Western ear, or if the West is simply more open to K-Pop on a mainstream level. Most likely a mixture of both. But what I do know is that it's about damn time. Enjoy!
