I'm always surprised as to how little that union members understand the inner workings of their unions. Therefore it is one of our goals at B Smith's Second Sticks to try and provide as much information from as many reliable sources as possible! We have a long talk with Selene Preston, Eastern Region Director of Photography/Camera Operator and National Assistant Secretary Treasurer of the International Cinematographers Guild (Local 600). Selene is a cameraperson through and through, and a champion of workers who has worked for years behind the scenes, rising to her current position in the Guild. We travel back to the time of the creation of the Unscripted Work Group, which has spent the last decade giving identity and a voice to unscripted union camera workers in the 600. We also touched on the situation with shows leaving our particular areas, and how the Eastern Region, and the New York/New Jersey area in particular, operates somewhat differently than things do on the West Coast. Ultimately, a strong union is going to be essential for us going forward in what will become the new normal, and Selene suggests ways that we can help make our unions stronger. If you have more questions (and there are no stupid questions), reach out to your union, it's essential!
