Baba Dochia – Adam Lawrence, Republic of Moldova 2014-2016

Adam’s desire to help others led him to the Peace Corps where he served as a business advisor in Moldova. While serving, he began building websites for the local governments and small businesses he worked with. Adam saw an opportunity to start a full-service creative agency. In 2016, he formed Enspire which has grown to a dynamic 11-member team of Moldovans and Returned Peace Corps Volunteers dedicated to creating unique value for their customers. Recently returned from Moldova, we talk about Adam’s service, adventures, and learn more about Enspire.

Where and when did you serve? What did you do?

Republic of Moldova – 2014-2016.

What is one of your favorite Peace Corps memories?

PST – Working on learning the language, spending time in the local community, in the garden area of my fellow PCT’s host families house. It was a difficult, but amazing time of learning and yet very refreshing.

What is one of your least favorite Peace Corps memories?

Getting detained by airport security in Moldova for having a bullet in my bag – took about 3 months of legal process but everything ending fine and I didn’t have to go to jail. Yes we can talk about this a bit more.

What do you miss about Peace Corps?

I miss simple aspects of it – having one job, living expenses are covered and you can just focus on getting to know people, working on projects and really just living life. I think the #hustle culture in the US is awesome, but sometimes is overdone and going back to the simple but important things in life is key.

What is something you learned in the Peace Corps?

Enjoy and focus on the little things.

Do you have a favorite quote or local saying?

Baba Dochia – Basically the best way I can translate it is that in the spring with it warms up and you think it is going to be okay and then a big snow storm comes a few days later. This is Baba Dochia (from Moldovan legends) coming back and most Moldovans don’t dress by temperature outside but the date on the calendar.
