               The Obligation to Love
                     1 John 4:7-12

 

·        This is a command: 1 John 3:23

Three Reasons why we have an obligation to Love:

I.          God is both the Source and Origin of Love

·        God is love – verse 8

·        There are three other statements about just what God is:

            1)     God is Spirit John 4:24

 

           2)     God is Light 1 John 1:5

 

           3)     God is a Consuming Fire Heb 12:2

                   God deals with the sinner through the Spirit, light and fire!

                  The spirit exposes sin through the light and then sin is 
                   consumed:  Psalm. 103:11-12

 

II.                God Demonstrates His Love in History

·                 We were in rebellion against God: Eph. 2:4,5

·                 No one is Righteous: Rom 3:10-11

·                  Even Isaiah failed God: Isaiah 64:6

 

III.             God Reveals His Love Through the Church

·               God’s love is about self-sacrifice: 1Jn.3:16

                 The command: John 13:34,35
