The Disciples learned a lot from Jesus during His earthly ministry. 

They saw Jesus perform many miracles during that time but they never said, “Lord, teach us to perform miracles." 

They heard Jesus preach incredible sermons during that time – but they never said, “Lord, teach us to preach.”

But when it came to prayer – they said –  “…Lord, teach us to pray.” (Luke 11:1)
