Backpage, the ‘red light district’ of the internet, ended in dramatic illegalities. Initially, it was believed that founders couldn’t really be liable for what their users posted, and backpage was safe. However, the tide turned against them, as accusations of abuse, trafficking, and things of that nature began to pile up. Soon, someone had to be accountable, and the nature of the website itself came into question.
