In the last of Jesus's "you have heard it said...but I tell you" teachings from Matthew 5:43-48, we are told to love our enemies. It's easy to love those who love us, but to be like our Father in Heaven, we must love those who oppose us and even persecute us. The world tells us that good guys and bad guys should fight it out for control, but hatred and disension are tools of the one true Enemy we have: Satan. If life were like a game of Chutes and Ladders, Satan would be the one setting up the chutes, to get us to slide deeper into adversarial conflict. Jesus, however, gives us ladders of love, to climb towards holiness and connection.
