In this episode, Jerry Bradshaw discuss: There are a lot of reasons we're seeing bad deployments/incidents recently As professional trainers, we often try to recommend the right dog, but handlers don't always follow those recommendations. Don't avoid picking a dog that may be "too much dog" for a handler. Encourage the handler to step up to handle the dog. 90% of certifications do not do anything to predict whether a dog will engage on the street.   Key Takeaways: Having Police K9's who fail to engage is unsafe, but the context is important. Handlers don't always know how to choose the right dog to train because they're not trainers. Active, involved cops are going to get some "Use of Force" complaints. If you don't have any, maybe you're not the most aggressive officer. Daily training is critical. 8-16 hrs/month done over a few days each month is not enough.   "If you do not have a productive police officer, putting a K9 with him is going to amplify his non-productivity." —  Jerry Bradshaw   Upcoming events where Jerry will be speaking: June 16-17, 2018 - Barry, Ontario, CA- PSA handling and training seminar June 19, 2018-  Barry, Ontario, CA Canadian Police K9 Association Seminar    June 30, 2018 - Vancouver BC, University of the Frasier Valley, PSA Precision handling July 1, 2018- Police K9 High risk deployment seminar   July 16-18 Speaker at The Working Dog Magazine Conference in St. Louis- Scenario Training, Skills Transitions   Aug. 20-21, 2018- Johannesburg South Africa- High Risk Deployment Seminar Aug. 24, 2018 PSA Decoy Camp Aug. 25-26, 2018 PSA Trail    Relevant articles to reference from today's episode:   K-9 Cop Magazine article: Simple-Lure Reward System   Balancing Independence with Handler Focus in Sport and Police Dogs   Restraining Canine Drives-Capping And Neutrality Part 1   Restraining Canine Drives- Capping And Neutrality Part 2   Working Dog Magazine - Drive Neutrality for Police Dogs     Get Jerry's book Controlled Aggression on Amazon.com   Website: http://controlledaggressionpodcast.com/ Tarheel Canine Training: http://www.tarheelcanine.com/ Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/tarheelcanine Twitter: https://twitter.com/tarheelcanine Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TarheelCanineTraining Protection Sports Website: http://psak9.org/   Train Hard, train smart, be safe.     Show notes by Podcastologist Danielle Taylor   Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions.
