Davis Washines grew up on the Yakama Nation Reservation and now works as the Tribal Police Chief. It took him a while to reconcile his personal beliefs with the understanding that his responsibility to protect others sometimes involves using a firearm.

"We were told from the time we were allowed to be around firearms, they were nothing to play with. It never occurred to any of us we needed these hunting rifles for person protection. Now when we respond to what you call an active shooter situation, generally suspects are armed with assault-type weapons."
