Fictional stories of spies can be truly exciting. An agent pretends to be the target’s friend and gets close to them, but all of their words and actions are just a disguise because their true intention is to bring harm to the one they are getting close to. The story often revolves around the tension of whether the spy will be successful and avert whatever danger is trying to be avoided. Or if somehow, the spy will be found out and his true motivation will be uncovered. These are fun tales to read, but we would probably not want to live them. So why then do we try to play spiritual games with God? People try to ‘be a good person’, but they’re actually just covering up the stuff they know is wrong by trying to balance it out with good. Or Christians try to focus on the stuff they think they do well and overlook the places where they are living in disobedience to the Lord. Do we think we can fool God? Balaam didn’t, and neither can we.
