Remember that daytime game show ‘Let’s Make A Deal’? Aside from the fact that everyone comes in a costume, the premise of the show is that contestants have to ‘make a deal’. The problem is that they most often don’t know the deal they are making. They are invited to give away something of known value for something of unknown value. Only after they make a choice do they get to see what they’ve chosen (or could have chosen) instead of what they already had. Too often, people think of religion as ‘making a deal’. We probably all know that this game show reflects a lot of what it’s like to make a deal with sin or the devil. But what about when we try to make a deal with God? Let’s see what happens when Balaam and Balak try to maneuver God into a deal to curse Israel.
