Gate 31 is The Gate of Leading.Bert has never stood for anything in his life — and he’s been chair of the allotment society for seven years. Gate 53 is The Gate of Beginnings.Og has started everything. Every universe, every cycle, every possible beginning that has ever begun. Og has never once seen how any of them turned out. This is not, by any measure, a satisfying existence. But the pressure keeps building, and what can you do.

Gate 39 is The Gate of The Provocateur.Ronald will find the one thing you were hoping to avoid, walk straight up to it, and address it directly — cigar in hand, basketball under his arm, already halfway out the door before you've finished reacting.

Gate 52 is The Gate of Inaction.Edmund is not doing nothing. He is absolutely, completely, with total commitment doing nothing. There is a difference, and if you give him a moment — he won't be long — he will explain it to you precisely.

Gate 15 is The Gate of Extremes.Michal does not have a routine. She has tried. Lord knows she has tried. What she has instead is something richer, stranger, and considerably harder to explain to anyone who uses a planner.

Gate 12 is The Gate of Caution, in other words "I Know I Can Try".Stuart doesn't say much. But when he does — when the moment is right and the mood has arrived and something in him quietly says yes, now — the room goes still, and nobody quite knows why, and nobody forgets it.

Gate 45 is The Gate of the Gatherer, in other words "I Have.”Richard knows whose house this is. He's always known. And if you give him half a chance, he'll make sure you know it too — but in a way that somehow makes you glad he's in charge.
