Throughout the history of Christendom, no ritual has been given so much importance as that of water baptism. Yet it has constantly been the cause of much controversy and contention.Many questions are raised by water baptism. Should it be by immersion or by pouring or by sprinkling? Should only clergy perform it, or can any baptized person baptize others? Should it be done in a church, or at an outdoor body of water? Should it be done on believers or infants? Should it be done in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, or in the name of Jesus Christ? Does it wash away sins, or is it merely the first sign of obedience of a believer? Only a study of the Bible can answer such questions. There is only one way to get at the truth: careful study of the Scriptures.
