After almost 2 months of being denied alcohol, the residents of the southern state of Kerala are finally rejoicing. The bars and beverage outlets across the state are set to now open up today without the need for an app or any kind of booking required. They can just walk into a bar or a government outlet and purchase their choice of liquor.
The government had multiple rounds of discussion with social and medical experts before deciding that the best way forward was to open up the sale of alcohol. This was also necessary keeping in mind the fact that alcohol sales account for a major portion of Kerala’s income. It wasn’t a surprise that the government once again turned to the drinkers in the state to take on the burden of reviving the economy that was already reeling from all the freebies being supplied in the market.
Kerala has one of the highest taxes on alcohol in the country. After the last tax hike following the first wave of the COVID19 pandemic, the state had increased the tax collected from alcohol sales to INR 855 crore for the 6 months from June to December 2020.
The government had hiked the tax on IMFL (Indian Made Foreign Liquor) by 35% and on beer by 10% taking the overall tax to a mind-blowing 247%. In other words, a bottle of 750ml Signature Whiskey that has an MRP of INR 760 and is available for INR 900 in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu is sold for over INR 1710 in Kerala.
A further 7% hike in tax, effective from February 2021, means that the government is set to generate over INR 3,500 crore for the year 2021 alone. This also means addition of INR 10 – INR 90 in the prices of various brands resulting in pushing the taxation to exceed 250% in many cases.
The population however does not seem to have an issue with the rising tax rates in the state as long as the supply is maintained. We talked to a few people after the announcement made by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan yesterday to get their views on the decision.
“This is awesome machane!”, said Clifton Britto a 46-year-old tour guide from Fort Kochi. “People come here to chill but what kind of vibe can we generate if there is no booze man. We have been struggling to get high and all the weed was also finished. We were going to try and smoke up some kaatupullu (wild weed) when the announcement came. Now we will have a blast!”
