Basic Bible #7 - Jon Jorgenson

Listen Later

Now that I have had the chance to re-watch our conversation I feel inspired. Here are two lessons that I learned from our conversation: BRIDGE THE GAP At the very beginning of our talk, Jon describes his experience coming into ministry as a conviction to inspire others. Coming from a background in theatre, it is easy to see how Jon has been able to undergo such a task of inspiration. His desire is to inspire people with the word of God in entertainment and education “bridging the gap” between creativity and edification. THIS IS HUGE! It is so easy for us to separate what it means to be creative and a call to be theologically deep. Just from my own personal experience, I find little joy in singing hymns. I just do not like the form of music that occurs in a majority of rural American churches. All of my friends disagree though, they think singing hymns is somehow more reverent and better for church edification but I would challenge them by asking what they listen to in the car? Now Jon never mentions hymns in this conversation and he may in fact LOVE them but he made me challenge my own perception of Church worship. Rather than looking at worship as a separate entity that is only good at the sacrifice of sound preaching, I need to be cultivating a atmosphere among other Christians that says WE CAN HAVE BOTH. I personally do not think that means of communicating the lyrics of most hymns are creative and captivating and my desire for something more “entertaining” and “creative” is not bad or wrong but maybe we as Christians need to start looking for ways we can also help “bridge the gap” between creativity and biblical authenticity. By doing so, we maximize the gifts that God has given us. LIVE OUT YOUR MINISTRY Another thing that sticks out from our conversation is that Jon has a clearly thought out methodology for reaching and cultivating an audience. What you’ll notice is that even in his personal online personas (those that are not explicitly Christian) he is intentional about conveying the truth of Jesus Christ. “We do not need to mention Jesus by name in order for Him to be glorified all the time – but a big part of ministry is being an example of what a Christian's life looks life outside of the pulpit.” Jon says this in response to me bringing up critics that may accuse of him of being too worldly for posting content that does not, on the surface, scream CHRISTIAN! And you guys will experience this same kind of conflict, those who judge your every action that does not resemble a person who is always in prayer or feeding the homeless. My goal will be to follow Jon’s example here and just be confident in Christ. I don’t have to post a bible verse on my Facebook page everyday to be a good Christian and I have the freedom to live my life and just enjoy God without having the pressure of performing. Jon’s point seems to be that if you are living in commitment to Jesus Christ, you can go and live and by doing so God will be glorified. This is not to say that we shouldn’t be talking to people about Jesus all the time or that we can avoid church or Christ’s call to holiness but rather that when we live according to the will of God we are not constrained to a specific kind of worship. By you being faithful to your wife and family, you show Jesus Christ. By you being a good employee, you show Jesus Christ. By you being the one who is steadfast amidst tragedy, you show Christ.
