Understanding the risks of internet security is the first part of creating a plan for securing your own personal devices. News other organizations lied about needing basic internet security. Back then people often had no firewall and when it was introduced another lie was made of what a firewall was. Nat -Network Address Translation was never meant to offer security but that is what most so-called firewalls are.
