There is mainly two kind of research any scientist does: Either basic/fundamental research or applied/translation research. Very few pursue both kinds of research and according to me, that is the best combination one can go ahead with the scientific inquiry. Here, I am narrating the difference between both kinds of research and the kind of thinking needed in such research. I have also given appropriate examples to ease your understanding.
