EDs have seen a spike over the past year in designer drugs, especially bath salts. These drugs are slightly altered chemicals that act as illicit drugs, but temporarily elude the FDA because of the new compound. Bath salts and other designer drugs present a challenge to the emergency physician because of ever-changing abuses, presentations, and potential complications.
