Batten down the hatches!
12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.
Remember the Perfect Storm?
We are in the eye of the storm- it SEEMS calm and peaceful and there is a hope that America’s conditions will change- that we will make it out of this storm, but we are coming out of the eye and the wave is barreling down fast upon us.
I hear the Lord saying to His people BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES
BE READY! (there’s no time to “get’ ready, you need to BE ready)
There is a great storm coming and if you haven’t prepared yourself, you will suffer loss.
Batten down the hatches-
In this case we are looking at the ‘opening in the deck of a ship’ meaning. Ships’ hatches, more formally called hatchways, were commonplace on sailing ships and were normally either open or covered with a wooden grating to allow for ventilation of the lower decks. When bad weather was imminent, the hatches were covered with tarpaulin and the covering was edged with wooden strips, known as battens, to prevent it from blowing off and prevent water from getting below deck. Not surprisingly, sailors called this ‘battening down’.
It means to prepare for disaster
Make your ship water tight. Waves of water can hit the outside of the ship and it’ll just get tossed around a little, but let water get into the ship and it will sink.
Bad weather is imminent. Prepare for difficult times.
Batten down the hatches- BE READY.
How? I’m glad you asked.
1 Corinthians 10:1-12 (NKJV)
1 Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 7 And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”[a] 8 Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; 9 nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now all[b] these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.
I have learned to never say, “I would NEVER do that”
I know that given the right place and right circumstances, I might do anything.
Was it not Peter, Jesus’ closest friend and confidant who said, “I will NEVER betray You!”
Think about going back to your high school reunion and your old flame is hanging all over you, now imagine that things between you and your spouse were not going well- thoughts of this old flame would keep coming back and if you entertained these thoughts, there’s no end to what you might do
