Battlefield Hardline Sequel Cancellation Explained

Listen Later

The possibility of a sequel to Battlefield Hardline, a spin-off in the Battlefield series developed by Visceral Games and published by Electronic Arts, has been ruled out. According to an interview with Thaddeus Sasser, the multiplayer design lead for Battlefield Hardline, the main reason for not pursuing a sequel was the unfavorable political climate at the time of the game's release. This period included significant events like the Ferguson shooting, which made it inappropriate for EA to continue with a game focused on police and crime themes. Sasser also mentioned that the game's association with the Battlefield franchise may have misled players, as it was intended as a spin-off rather than a mainline game.

Additionally, the reception of Battlefield Hardline was mixed, with critics praising the game's multiplayer mode and accessibility but criticizing its plot and narrative. The game's unique 'cops and robbers' concept, while innovative, did not resonate well with the traditional Battlefield community, further complicating the prospect of a sequel.

The closure of Visceral Games in 2017 also eliminated any remaining possibility of a sequel, as the studio that developed the original game was no longer operational.
