  • EPISODE 21: WHY DOES BOURBON AFFECT EVERYBODY DIFFERENTLY?

🥃 WHY DOES BOURBON AFFECT EVERYBODY DIFFERENTLY? — IS IT THE BOURBON OR THE PERSON?

Ever notice how one bourbon can give somebody heartburn while another person drinks it without a problem? Or how one person gets a headache, another gets sleepy, and somebody else suddenly thinks they're the funniest motherfucker in the room?

Same bourbon. Different people. Completely different reactions.

In this episode of BBM: After Hours, we're digging into the science behind why bourbon affects each of us differently—and why the answer isn't always as simple as proof or how much you're drinking.

It starts with my own experience. I've dealt with acid reflux for nearly 18 years, and I can enjoy some 120–130 proof bourbons without an issue. But Old Grand-Dad 114 Single Barrel? That son of a bitch seems to flip a switch.

    Why the hell is that?

From heartburn and headaches to hiccups, facial flushing, intoxication, hangovers, and even how we perceive flavor, we're exploring what happens when bourbon meets human biology.

We'll talk about metabolism, genetics, tolerance, congeners, food, hydration, medications, and why the exact same bourbon can affect even the same person differently from one night to the next.

And of course, we'll get into the guy who claims bourbon doesn't affect him—while telling the same fucking story for the third time. 😂

    Because here's the bigger question:

Are we giving the bourbon too much credit—or too much blame—for what our own bodies are doing?

🎙️ BBM: After Hours — Why Does Bourbon Affect Everybody Differently?

What's in the glass matters. But who's drinking it matters too.

  • EPISODE 20: BOURBON & VETERANS — MORE THAN WHAT'S IN THE GLASS

BOURBON & VETERANS — MORE THAN WHAT'S IN THE GLASS

What is it about bourbon, cigars, and military veterans that seems to bring so many of us together?

As a Marine Corps veteran, I've noticed there's a pretty strong connection between the bourbon community, cigar culture, and those who've served. But I don't believe it's necessarily about the alcohol.

It's about the people, the stories, the camaraderie, and the memories.

In this episode of BBM: After Hours, we're exploring why bourbon and veteran culture seem to overlap so naturally.

The friendships that pick up right where they left off, even after twenty years. The relentless ball-busting, dark humor, and stories we've told a hundred fucking times. The people who helped shape our lives, and those who aren't around to tell their stories anymore.

We'll also talk about the complicated relationship between military culture and alcohol, why a glass of bourbon should never be a requirement for belonging, and how sometimes the best part of sharing a pour has absolutely nothing to do with the bourbon itself.

Because whether it's a bottle of bourbon, a good cigar, a backyard fire, or simply pulling up a chair with old friends, the ritual is just an excuse to bring people together.

And sometimes, those moments mean more than we realize.

🎙️ BBM: After Hours — Bourbon & Veterans

Here's to those who served, the friendships that never fade, and the people whose stories live on long after they're gone.

The table matters more than what's sitting on it. And the people around it matter even more.

  • EPISODE 19: WHAT’S IN A NAME? — THE STORIES BEHIND THE BOURBON

WHAT’S IN A NAME? — THE STORIES BEHIND THE BOURBON

Wild Turkey. Chicken Cock. Larceny. Four Roses. Old Grand-Dad. Angel’s Envy.

Ever stop and wonder where the hell some of these bourbon names came from?

Turns out, there are some pretty fascinating stories behind the labels. Stories involving romance, theft, hunting trips, family legacies, American history, and occasionally a little creative bullshit.

In this episode of BBM: After Hours, we're digging into the origins of ten recognizable bourbon names:

    🥃 Four Roses
    🥃 Larceny
    🥃 Old Forester
    🥃 Maker’s Mark
    🥃 Wild Turkey
    🥃 Buffalo Trace
    🥃 Knob Creek
    🥃 Chicken Cock
    🥃 Old Grand-Dad
    🥃 Angel’s Envy

Some of these stories are well-documented history. Others have been passed down for generations, embellished along the way, or polished up by marketing departments until the line between fact and folklore gets a little blurry.

We'll separate what we know from what we've been told, uncover some surprising connections between familiar brands, and explore the people, places, and legends that gave these bourbons their identities.

Because sometimes the story behind the bottle is almost as interesting as what's inside it.

  • EPISODE 18: The Thinking Pour | Bourbon, Solitude & the Creative Mind

The Thinking Pour | Bourbon, Solitude & the Creative Mind

Some of the best ideas don't come from meetings, brainstorming sessions, or sitting behind a desk. Sometimes they come when the world finally gets quiet.

In this episode of After Hours, we're exploring the connection between bourbon, solitude, reflection, and creativity.

From business strategies and building Bourbon Barrel Mafia to podcast ideas and projects around the house, some of my most creative moments have happened while sitting alone with a bourbon and absolutely no agenda.

But is it really the bourbon? Or is it the simple act of slowing down, eliminating distractions, and giving ourselves permission to think?

We'll explore the psychology of mind-wandering, the science behind alcohol's relaxing effects, the difference between solitude and loneliness, and why some of our best ideas arrive when we're not actively looking for them.

Because sometimes the most productive thing you can do is absolutely nothing.

  • EPISODE 17: Grain to Glass - How Bourbon Is Made

🥃 GRAIN TO GLASS: HOW BOURBON IS MADE

We talk about proof, mash bills, age statements, barrels and tasting notes all the time.

But how does a pile of fucking grain actually become the bourbon sitting in your glass?

In this episode of BBM: After Hours, we're following bourbon through the entire process—from grain to glass.

Corn, rye, wheat and malted barley. Milling. Cooking. Mashing. Fermentation. Distillation. New charred oak barrels. Rickhouses. Years of maturation. Dumping, blending, proofing and finally bottling.

We'll talk about what happens at each step, why it matters, and how decisions made long before you ever crack the seal can ultimately affect what you smell and taste in the finished bourbon.

What does yeast actually do? Why sour mash? What are the heads, hearts and tails? Why char the barrel? What happens to bourbon while it's sitting in a Kentucky rickhouse for years? And how the hell does something that starts out clear eventually become that amber whiskey we're pouring into a glass?

There are a lot of steps between a field of corn and Two Fingers. Neat.

Tonight, we're walking through every damn one of them.

  • EPISODE 16: I'm Afraid I'll Drink Bourbon Like Beer

I’ve got friends who tell me they won’t drink bourbon for one simple reason: “I drink beer too fast, and I’m afraid I’ll do the same thing with bourbon.”

Turns out, that concern isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

On this episode of After Hours, we dig into why we develop drinking habits in the first place, how years of drinking beer can create an almost automatic rhythm, and what happens when you suddenly replace that beer with a glass of bourbon.

We get into the science behind habit and automatic behavior, why your brain associates certain situations with reaching for a drink, how sip size and drinking pace become learned behaviors, and even TRPV1—one of the sensory receptors involved in that unmistakable bourbon burn.

Most importantly, we talk about why enjoying bourbon doesn’t mean drinking it the same way you drink everything else. It’s a different drink, a different experience, and it deserves a different rhythm.

🥃 Pour less. Sip slower. Taste more.

  • EPISODE 15: The Bourbon Soundtrack

    THE BOURBON SOUNDTRACK

Does the music playing in the background actually change the way you experience a glass of bourbon?

    I think it does.

In this episode of BBM: After Hours, we're talking about the soundtrack that goes with the pour—from country, Southern rock and blues to jazz, classic rock and everything in between.

And we're digging into the songs themselves.

Tennessee Whiskey. White Lightning. Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound. Jack Daniel's, If You Please. Bourbon in Kentucky. Whiskey Drink. Ballad of a Southern Man.

Some celebrate drinking. Some warn about where it can take you. Some use whiskey to deal with heartbreak. And sometimes the whiskey isn't really about whiskey at all—it's a storytelling device for love, loss, memories, home and identity.

We'll also get into how different genres can change the mood, pace and even the experience of what's in your glass.

And then there are a few genres I have absolutely no fucking idea how to pair with bourbon.

    Techno?

Hell, Eminem told us in 2002 that nobody listens to techno. I thought we settled that shit 24 years ago. 😂

This isn't about telling you what you should listen to while drinking bourbon.

It's about finding the music that makes your pour, your moment and your experience better.

Because there's no universal bourbon soundtrack.

Drink what you like. Listen to what you like.

  • EPISODE 14: The Daily Drinker

    THE DAILY DRINKER

Not every bottle needs to be allocated, impossible to find, or expensive as hell to be worth drinking.

Sometimes the best bourbon on your shelf is the one you can actually find, afford, open, pour—and replace when it's gone.

In this episode of BBM: After Hours, we're talking about the Daily Drinker.

What makes a bourbon worthy of that title? Does price matter? Proof? Availability? And why do some $30–$50 bottles earn a permanent spot on the shelf while bottles costing three times as much collect dust?

We'll talk about some great everyday bourbons, why they matter—especially for newer bourbon drinkers—and why “good bourbon” has absolutely nothing to do with how hard the bottle was to find.

No hype. No trophy bottles. No secondary-market bullshit.

Just good bourbon you can pour on a Tuesday night without wondering whether you should've saved it for a special occasion.

  • EPISODE 13: Why We Smoke Cigars

    WHY WE SMOKE CIGARS

If you've never smoked a cigar, you might look at one and wonder:

    What's the attraction?

For those of us who enjoy them, the answer usually has very little to do with simply smoking tobacco.

    It's the ritual.

The hour you deliberately set aside.

The conversations that happen while you're sitting there.

The bourbon in the glass beside you.

The friendships, stories, celebrations, quiet nights—and the memories attached to certain cigars and certain people.

In this episode of BBM: After Hours, we're talking about why we smoke cigars—what makes cigar culture different, why people are drawn to it, and why sometimes you find yourself staring at the last inch of a great cigar wishing the damn thing wasn't about to end.

You don't have to smoke cigars to understand this episode.

Because ultimately, it's about something much bigger.

Slowing down long enough to enjoy the moment you're in—and the people you're sharing it with.

  • EPISODE 12: WOMEN & BOURBON: WHO SAID THIS WAS A BOYS' CLUB?

WOMEN & BOURBON: WHO SAID THIS WAS A BOYS' CLUB?

I went into this episode with what I thought was a pretty simple question:

Why does bourbon still seem so overwhelmingly male?

    Then I started asking women.

    And the conversation changed.

Some love bourbon. Some prefer Scotch or other whiskey. Some don't like bourbon at all. Some have been welcomed into bourbon and cigar culture with open arms. Others have been doubted, talked down to, or treated like they somehow had to prove they belonged there.

And one thing became very clear:

WHISKEY and BOURBON aren't necessarily the same conversation.

    So we went deep.

🥃 Is it really about taste and proof?
🥃 Does bourbon still carry a “man's drink” image?
🥃 Has decades of marketing shaped that perception?
🥃 Are women actually underrepresented—or are we simply not seeing them?
🥃 Why do some women enjoy whiskey but not bourbon?
🥃 And does anybody have the right to tell someone else how they're supposed to drink the bourbon they paid for?

I also share the real experiences of several women who were generous enough to answer my questions—and some of what they told me challenged my own assumptions.

This isn't an episode about telling women they should drink bourbon.

And it sure as hell isn't a man trying to explain to women what women think.

    It's about listening.

Because maybe women never needed an invitation into bourbon in the first place.

Maybe they've been here all along.

If you want a seat at the table, pull up a damn chair.

If you want bourbon, pour the bourbon.

If you want Scotch, pour the Scotch.

If you want a cigar, grab the cutter.

And if you don't want any of it, that's okay too.

Bourbon doesn't know who's holding the glass.
