BCBA Concepts B3 | Respondent vs Operant Conditioning

Listen Later

Welcome to Behavioral Intelligence con Mara Sánchez, a podcast created to help students understand the science of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and prepare for the BCBA Certification Exam – 6th Edition.

In this episode we continue Domain B – Concepts and Principles of Behavior Analysis from the BACB Test Content Outline.

Today’s topic:

B3 – Identify and distinguish between respondent conditioning and operant conditioning.

Understanding the difference between these two learning processes is fundamental to the science of behavior analysis.

In this episode we discuss:

Respondent Conditioning (Classical Conditioning)
A learning process in which a neutral stimulus becomes capable of eliciting a reflexive response after being paired with an unconditioned stimulus.

Examples include physiological or reflexive responses such as salivation, fear responses, or emotional reactions.

Operant Conditioning
A learning process in which behavior is influenced by its consequences. Behavior increases or decreases depending on reinforcement or punishment.

Operant conditioning explains most voluntary behaviors and is the foundation of many interventions used in Applied Behavior Analysis.

In this episode you will learn:

• The key differences between respondent and operant conditioning
• Historical contributions of Ivan Pavlov and B. F. Skinner
• Real-world examples from ABA therapy
• How these concepts may appear on the BCBA exam

This podcast series follows the BCBA 6th Edition Test Content Outline, helping future behavior analysts build strong conceptual understanding while studying for certification.
