Be a good King 1 Sam 19 - Sermon Humility
I
don’t think its too much to ask your leader to possess some basic human
decency. We
should have leaders that are pretty nice people- live by some basic standards problem is when we hold them to a standard we
don’t hold to ourselves. What good is that?Interesting
story here- Jonathan is Sauls son, but hears his dad wants to kill his friend,
so he warns him. Convinces dad to not kill David, he agrees, but it doesn’t
last long. David starts winning with the philistines, more popular and Saul
don’t like it. Saul tries to kill him. Saul sends hitmen to his house. Davids
wife Michal (sauls daughter) tries to stall them. Saul seems upset his own
daughter isn’t on his side. She even says David tried to kill her! David goes
to hideout in Ramah with Samuel- Saul sends hitmen again and they run into
prophets every time. Saul goes to investigate and he gets hit with the spirit.
He falls out in the spirit and gets humbled by God. Saul
is not being a good King here. He’s actually being a bad King and a bad person.
Today-
lets look at What Saul did and think how we can do better than Saul- Be a good
King
If you are going to be King- Keep your wordSaul didn’t keep his word to not Kill david- It was lip serviceNow Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill David;Jonathan talks to him- says hold on pop- don’t do it6 So Saul heeded the voice of Jonathan, and Saul swore, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be killed.” 11 Saul also sent messengers to David’s house to watch him and to kill him in the morning. 15 Then Saul sent the messengers back to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.” 20 Then Saul sent messengers to take David.Come on Saul! This guy is supposed to be King. Can’t we expect that at the least he is a man of his word?Numbers 30:2 If a man makes a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.Saul had the Pentateuch! He had to know that lying was a sin- and making oaths was badThere was swift OT punishment for those in Israel who didn’t keep their wordSaul should have known this- He is the King of Israel-Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; For He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed— 5 Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.It is always amazing to me when people don’t keep their word. Don’t show up. Don’t pay their debts. Don’t follow up. Say they are going to be there and they aren’t. Saul says- I wont kill David and then shortly after- Let me kill that guy! How can you trust him?David knew what it meant to keep his vows! He was a man of his word!Psalm 116:14 I will pay my vows to the Lord, Now in the presence of all His people.
What Does it mean to you? - Sermon Humility Are you any better than Saul? Are you someone who keeps your word? can you be counted on? I tell you who can be- Jay- this dude doesn’t know how to fail. Never let me down oncePro 20:25 It is a snare for a man to devote rashly something as holy, And afterward to reconsider his vows. Its hard to be a man of your word! Orders for Egypt, marriage vows, Mortgage, etcLev 5:4 4 ‘Or if a person swears, speaking thoughtlessly with his lips to do evil or to do good, whatever it is that a man may pronounce by an oath, and he is unaware of it—when he realizes it, then he shall be guilty in any of these matters. You don’t have much more than your word. Its all you have. You should keep it! Even the membership vows that people make to the church- I don’t know why people make them ...
