  • I work with people who I call successful, but not satisfied. They tend to be high achievers and a lot of times have got to the point where they’re chasing that brass ring and they wake up one day and they feel that from the outside they look successful but from the inside they feel a lot of stress, anxiety, burnout, sometimes there may be problems with health or relationships. I try to help increase the overlap between professional success and personal happiness. We do this by shifting their mindset to realise that maybe there’s a better way of doing things than how they’ve been doing it up until now.
  • As people rise within organisations, people that are good individual contributors will get elevated into management roles. Unfortunately, one of the things I’ve seen in my own career as well as many of the people that I’ve coached is that many companies do not have any kind of training around how to be an effective manager. People will oftentimes model management/leadership behaviour that they’ve seen other people use, which may or may not be effective, or they don’t really understand how to leverage all the resources that they’ve been entrusted with as they rise within the organisation and therefore try to shoulder a lot of the burden on their own or use ineffective leadership techniques (most of the time unconsciously) to try to motivate the people under them and they don’t get the kind of productivity out of themselves and their teams that is completely possible, but it’s almost as if they have blinders on to get it without so much grind.
  • It can be a tug of war. If somebody’s resistant and you decide to pick up the other end of the rope and pull it to pull them forward, they’re just going to pull in the other direction. People can only motivate themselves. As leaders/coaches, we can give people the opportunity to decide to change or shift their mindset. What I do, as a coach, is hold up a mirror to show them what they’ve been doing. 
  • Most of the time, when people are given coaching by their organisation or they seek it out on their own, it’s because they are feeling some pain. They have a goal they’ve been trying to reach and they’re frustrated because they’ve tried everything they can think of to get there and it’s not working. So, they start to think “maybe there is another way”. At some point we have to flip the table and start looking forwards to what they want rather than back at what they’re trying to get away from.
