sam 9 Be Kind- Rewind

Back
in the day- rented VHS tapes- Be kind- rewind- Premise- someone else was kind

Since David received God’s kindness, he wanted to share it with someone elseNow David said, “Is there still anyone who is left of the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”After David had experienced victory, established himself as king- his response was to find someone else to bless. It was a natural response to the protection and grace he had receivedAttacked by Saul- pursued by Saul. Protected and delivered- made king- Huge blessingsHe wanted to bless someone else because he was blessed- You should do this to! David and Jonathan had entered into covenant with each other- and David wasn’t going to forget the covenant that he had made- The blessings extended past the death of JonathanThe commitments that Bible people made mattered- They didn’t enter into them lightly

Where was Mephibosheth? He may have thought that because there was  a new king- that he would be executed- Chances are that Mephibosheth was in hiding- afraid for his life4 So the king said to him, “Where is he?” What kindness did David show him? Khesed- From the root- to bow- to be equal with. When you show someone kindness- you are operating on an equal plane with them- either going down to where they are, or bringing them up to where you are. It’s a submission of yourself and an elevation of the other person- This is a huge deal in Biblical society- Not something to be taken lightly- for  a king to associate with the lowly- The only answer is he actually meant it when he said the vow and intended to keep it- marriage, debts, oaths, vows. Words mean something- They do. Mephibosheth may have been scared- it must be why David assured him such as this- 7 So David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan your father’s sake, and will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather; and you shall eat bread at my table continually.”But he made him big promises- you’ll be at my table- you’ll be taken care of. Kindness upon Kindness simply because he was the son of his best friend Jonathan1 Sam 20: 42 READ the covenant between David and Jonathan.

We are MephiboshethMephibosheth did nothing to receive this blessing other than he was related to JonathanIt was because of the kindness of DAVID not of Mephibosheth that he received the blessingIt was ALL David- HIS Kindness. HIS holding to his oaths. HE keeping his covenants. God came looking for you before you were looking for him, God extends us kindness because of HIS goodness, not ours.  It is because of HIS covenant promises, David knew these promises- Psalm 106:45  And for their sake He remembered His covenant, And relented according to the multitude of His mercies. All through the OT we see a God who keeps his covenant to his people- He doesn’t give up- he shows kindness to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob etc because of who HE ISDavid shows us the heart of God in this instance- that HE shows kindness to MEphibosethBut we are Mephibosheth here- we’re lame, broken, worthless, with nothing to offerBut GOD in HIS Kindness- comes and rescues US from OUR pain- our Misery- Our bad decisionsRomans 5:8  But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.God didn’t look down on us and save us because of our worthiness- but because of his greatness1 John 4:9-10  In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. But we serve a God of Forgiveness- he always has bee...
