When you have to share difficult things, you might want to ease in and that's a very good idea. However, you should try to make sure you don't mince your words. I usually start by learning as much as I can about the person. This knowledge will guide me on the best path to share the difficult thing I have to share with them. They have to hear the news and it is your responsibility to make sure you give them the news as calmly and succinctly as possible.
