Naima Esters didn’t initially see herself as someone who belonged in the Peacemaker Academy. In her words, she thought of herself as a “bad kid.” But what began as a summer program became something much deeper—a journey that changed how she understood violence, herself, and the kind of person she wanted to become.
In this episode of Be the Peace, Josh King sits down with Naima to talk about growing from one of Alive’s early Peacemakers into a young leader helping others navigate many of the same struggles she has faced.
Naima reflects on learning that nonviolence is about far more than stopping fights. It also means confronting the violence we carry within ourselves, learning to recognize our own worth, choosing healing over the need to prove something, and putting the principles of nonviolence into practice when life actually tests them.
She also speaks candidly about the profound impact Peacemakers has had on her life, the adults who modeled a different way of being, the future she hopes to create for her own family, and her conversations with other young people about guns, fear, retaliation, and the cycles of loss that continue from one person to another.
It’s an honest conversation about growth, healing, internal nonviolence, and what it means to become the peace you want to see around you.
