This mystery "bears" reading!
A Tempe Crabtree Mystery
Tempe Crabtree would have an idyllic life living in a pine tree studded and mountainous small village of the very aptly named Bear Creek, California--if it weren't for bears plaguing this small community. And they seem to be everywhere; in people's homes, the local school yard and plundering garbage cans behind the local café. They look cute, but bears, as the author teaches the locals both new and old, aren't always cuddly, and in a couple of instances they can maim if not kill humans.
Tempe, as deputy sheriff of Bear Creek is frequently called for all sorts the reasons, not the least of which would be to rid a family's home of another bear raiding their fridge. She's called to rid the Hampton family of a bear and meets the harried relatives of the once vibrant Vivian Hampton, a woman who is now suffering with dementia. Then there's Mrs. Onstett, who insists that Tempe do something about her daughter's relationship with an unsuitable boy and the unhappy, if oddly detached, parents of a fifteen-year-old boy who has committed suicide.
Untangling all of these people's problems, along with dealing with bears, will try Tempe's patience, but ultimately, it's her no-nonsense approach to people that allows her to discover who would cover up a death by pretending it was caused by a bear.
I can see why readers come back time after time to read the next Tempe Crabtree mystery. I want to live in Bear Creek, do rounds with Tempe, eat at Two-John's wonderful café and taste his latest culinary creation, sit in a pew at Hutch's church while he gives his parishioners kindly advice.
All in all, this was very cleverly done mystery and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Beauty and the Bears
The small town mountain setting for "Bears With Us" is surprisingly similar to the place I live. The quaint ,scenic setting is captivating and the characters immediately become familiar folk. Due to the fact she is a local resident, Tempe Crabtree, of Native American descent, is the most demanded Bear Creek sheriff's deputy and rushes from one hot call to another. Such a hectic schedule leaves scant time to rest or enjoy her personal life with her husband, the pastor of the community church. Marilyn Meredith lets you ride along beside Tempe as she tends to her law enforcement job.
The book covers many serious subjects, one of which is Lewy Body Disease, and provides credible insight into black bears and how to
handle living safely in towns that have sprung up on their personal turf. The pace is fast moving and is an easy read. I thoroughly enjoyed it
and know you will, too.
