Establishing the rhythm of the journey, the world. Kane treats Lyra as cargo. She is silent and observant. "Dust Devils": Not wind, but swarms of nano-scarabs that strip flesh. "Singing Canyons": Geographic formations that echo with the last moments of those who died there (audio flashbacks). A stop at a "waystation" goes wrong when Lyra's presence causes a local's latent infection to violently erupt. Kane must fight his way out. Lyra, for the first time, speaks: "I'm sorry. It reacts to fear."
