The first so-called “smart gun” has hit the shelves at U.S. retail outlets, including one of the biggest firearms stores in California, according to the Washington Post
The Smart System iP1, a .22-caliber pistol made by the German gun-maker Armatix GmbH, can only function with an accompanying wristwatch, which is sold separately.

When the RFID-equipped watch is activated by a PIN number and placed near the gun — like when a shooter grips the handle — it sends a signal to unlock the gun and a light on the back of the weapon turns green, according to the report. Otherwise, the firearm stays locked and the light on the back remains red, it stated.

The pistol sells for $1,399 and the watch retails for another $399 — more than double the cost of .40-caliber Glock handgun, according to the article.
The company is betting that demand for the technology will increase as consumers seek guns modified for safety.

The intelligent iW1 wrist watch arms the weapon for firing and also has the following functions:
PIN code entry and PIN code management for weapon enablement
charge level indicator for watch and weapon
    time-controlled weapon deactivation
    extensive watch functions, waterproof
interchangeable straps, power supply for 5,000 rounds or a minimum of one year standby, depending on operation.

    iP1 Pistol with innovative features:
.22 LR calibre, 10 round magazine
    electronic magazine disconnect
    different operating modes
an operating distance of up to 10 inches
    integrated grip and drop safety
color-coded operating mode, patented mechatronic interface for additional applications (e.g. camera)
    tested and approved by ATF

    Problems I see with this….
Requires some sort of power source…. power sources fail!
    Pairing issues?
    Battlefield pick up
price – Out of range for most people

  • BT Episode 9 – What Handgun Should I Buy?
Hosted By and Produced By: Merle Cox

    Show notes:

    Introduction:
As an NRA Pistol Instructor I get asked all the time, “What hand gun should I buy?”

Well, I am going to tell you, but not just yet. First lets discuss the different types and styles of hand guns.

    1.) Revolvers – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolver

Compared to autoloading handguns, a revolver is often much simpler to operate and may have greater reliability. (less moving parts)

In general, revolvers stand up to long-term neglect better than semi-automatics.

Nearly all the parts in a revolver are made of metal. Steel is the primary metal utilized but brass (for the frame) was utilized at one point in time and aluminum alloy has been used to reduce the weight of the gun. Stainless Steel is also another popular metal utilized to make revolvers. Manufactures recently started utilizing polymer (plastic) to produce revolvers ( https://www.madehow.com/Volume-1/Revolver.html)

Come in different sizes (J frame, K frame, X frame)

    Various calibers

    2.) Semi-Automatics – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-automatic_pistol

(semi-automatic as well as automatic and selective fire actions are differentiated from other forms such as single-action or double-action revolvers, pump-action, bolt-action, or lever-action firearms by eliminating the need to manually cycle the weapon after each shot.)

Semi-automatic’s are generally made up of more parts and pieces. They are designed to feed at ammunition at a faster rate, and they are designed to expel the casing of the ammunition after the handgun has been fired.

Due to the way they are designed semi-automatics can hold more ammunition that a revolver.

A revolver is generally not as resistant to abuse as a semi-automatic (abuse meaning dropping the weapon, or allowing severe contamination by dirt or mud). The revolver’s clockwork-like internal parts are relatively delicate and can become misaligned after a severe impact, and its revolving cylinder can become jammed by excessive dirt or debris.

More moving parts because of the sliding and ejecting of the cartridge when the round has been fired. You have a clip and that adds a few more pieces that could break lock up.

Semi autos are made out of steel, stainless steel, aluminum, polymer.

    4″. 4 1/2″. 5″

    Various calibers

3.) What hand gun should I buy?

    * You need to try all different types of hand guns.
    * Shot revolvers, shot semi-automatics
    * Don’t buy a hand gun based on the decision of others.
    * You need to find the tool that best fits you!
    * Really, it comes down to personal preference and what works for you!

  • BT Episode 8 – Gun Safety
Hosted By and Produced By: Merle Cox

    Show notes:

    Introduction:
Gun Safety. Lets discuss several rules you need to follow when using or storing a gun.

    *  Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction – A safe direction depends on your environment.
    * Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
    * Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use – Ask yourself, are you ready to use this gun?
    * Know your target and what is behind it – You need to be aware of your backstop and what is beyond it.
    * You need to ensure your gun is safe to operate – Read the manual, make sure it works properly. Guns are mechanical and mechanical devices fail!
    * Know how to use your gun – Be sure you know how to utilize the safety features of your gun. Know how to load and unload, know how the gun works.
    * Utilize the proper ammunition for your gun – There are a plethora of different types of ammunition out there. Some look very similar.
    * Wear the appropriate safety equipment – Always utilize eye and ear protection.
    * NEVER use alcohol or drugs before or while you are operating a gun.
    * Be aware that certain types of guns and certain types of shooting activities require additional safety precautions.

  • BT Episode 7 – Complacency
Hosted By and Produced By: Merle Cox

    Show notes:

    Introduction:
com·pla·cen·cy (k m-pl s n-s ). n. 1. A feeling of contentment or self-satisfaction, especially when coupled with an unawareness of danger, trouble, or controversy.
As I was out walking my in-laws dog this morning I began to think, “I don’t have anything with me to protect myself”. I didn’t have my keys, I didn’t have my cell phone, I didn’t have a gun, and I didn’t even have my id. Talk about stupid!
I began to realize that I appear to have become complacent in my surroundings. I live in what I believe is a nice neighborhood in a nice town but we are not void of crime. Needless to say, I couldn’t even defend myself from a wild dog much less a crazed mad man.
That got me to thinking about complacency. We need to ensure we don’t become complacent in our everyday lives. I think that is harder to do than one might think. So I think it is important to recognize when we become complacent so we get an attitude adjustment. We need to remind ourselves about the need to maintain a warrior mindset and ensure we are “in” the appropriate Cooper color code.
Another thing to think about is complacency while we clean our guns and while we train. We can’t get into a “place” where we become complacent and mishandle our gun and cause an accident. We need to constantly be mindful and try and not to let the tasks we perform become mundane. We need to keep our mind on the task at hand.
Remember, be aware of your mindset. If you find yourself becoming complacent change it! Don’t let complacency get you in trouble.

  • BT Episode 6 – Having A Warrior Mindset
Hosted By and Produced By: Merle Cox

    Show notes:

    Introduction:
Lets go ahead and define what a warrior is. It is “someone who is skilled in combat or warfare.” A warrior trains for combat and they are well prepared for it. In order to be considered a warrior one must constantly be in training.
Now, lets define mindset. A mindset is an attitude that predetermines your response to a given situation. Your mindset helps determine what you do and how well you do it. You can have a positive mindset or a negative mindset.
Lets talk about a negative mindset. Say you have an 8 O’clock Monday morning meeting every week with your boss. You’re not a morning person and you haven’t even had your second cup of coffee by eight. You don’t look forward to this meeting at all. All you can think about is how early it is, it’s Monday, and I want my second cup of coffee! You would rather be at your desk drinking that 2nd cup of coffee catching up on the e-mail that has come in since you left Friday evening. You’ve already predetermined that the meeting is a waste of time before you’ve entered the room and you don’t even know what the meeting is about. The boss has already lost you before you even place your butt in the seat.
Having a warrior mindset is about having a positive attitude the situation. You know what the goal is and you can demonstrate the appropriate behavior to back it up. You are well prepared for what ever comes your way (that’s where the constant training comes in). You’re confident because you are well trained; you’re prepared; and you know how to react to the situation because you have thought about it. You are going to win and survive whatever situation you are confronted with. That’s a positive mindset!
You can’t go into a survival situation with a negative mindset. In order to win you must have a positive mindset. You need to say to yourself, I WILL win this, I WILL overcome this. I WILL…. You need to train and prepare you mind to think like this.
Dr. Michael J. Asken wrote in one of his books, “…experience shows that up to 90% of successful performance is attributed to psychological skills. Rarely is that number reported to be less than 40%. This comes from talking to military personnel, police officers, including SWAT tactical team members, and other emergency responders who engage in life and death situations.” We must have our minds right.
You must see yourself winning. Mental imagery, or visualization, can be one of the most powerful skill sets a person can have to enhance their mental toughness. If you don’t see yourself winning the fight, there is a good chance you’ve lost the fight before it started. If you don’t first see it how can you achieve it?
Mind training goes a long way. Think about the action you want to perform. Focus on it and imagine yourself going through the motions while quietly sitting in a place with no distractions. Visually see yourself going through the motions. Just like training on the range to produce muscle memory, train your brain. See it and believe it!
The folks that make it through difficult situations are the people with the best attitudes and strongest wills to survive. It’s not always the biggest and strongest who make it, but those with the most heart and the most passion; those who keep on going no matter what is thrown at them are usually the ones to succeed.
There is a great book out by Dr. Michael J Asken and LTC Dave Grossman called Warrior Mindset. its a very in-depth look at the Warrior Mindset. Even though the focus is on Police Officers and Military members, its a book that will help you prepare yourself should you ever...

  • BT Episode 5 – Run, Hide, Fight (Avoid, Evade, Counter)
Hosted By and Produced By: Merle Cox

    Show notes:

    Introduction:
When we are faced with a serious self defense situation we basically have three different ways we can react to the situation.
Run (Avoid): Completely remove yourself (and your loved ones if applicable) from the situation. YOUR BEST alternative IF you can do it safely.
Hide (Evade): You may not be able to run, so you next best option is hiding. Remember to lock doors if present and if they have the ability to be locked. Close any blinds and turn out any lights. Mute your cell phone. But be prepared to fight if you have to. Make a plan, see your plan through, and implement that plan with a Warriors Mindset!
Fight (Counter):If you have to fight, bring total shock and awe. Be committed! See your plan through! You want to live through the encounter and make it home to your loved ones.
Always remember that there really is no order and you have to do what is in your best interest.

(b McLellan, Dennis (1 October 2006). “Jeff Cooper, 86; Firearms Expert Set Standard for Pistol Technique”. Los Angeles Times. Retrieved 2011-03-09)
    Definition:
Situation awareness is the perception of environmental elements with respect to time and/or space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status after some variable has changed, such as time, or some other variable, such as a predetermined event. It is also a field of study concerned with perception of the environment critical to decision-makers in complex, dynamic areas from aviation, air traffic control, power plant operations, military command and control, and emergency services such as fire fighting and policing; to more ordinary but nevertheless complex tasks such as driving an automobile or bicycle.
