You know, we sure do make a big deal about Christmas. And we should! This coming Sunday is the second Sunday of Advent. During Advent and the Christmas season we preachers use the word “Incarnation” repeatedly. What does the word incarnation mean? Why is incarnation of our God necessary?
Incarnation is a term used in Christian teaching to indicate that Jesus, the Son of God, took on human flesh. It means “the act of being made flesh.” It comes from the Latin version of John 1:14, which in English reads, “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.”
Merriam Webster’s definition of “Incarnation” (1) the embodiment of a deity or spirit in some earthly form (2) the union of divinity with humanity in Jesus Christ.
My daughter Audra and my son-in-law Blake have a little human soon to come into this world (February 14). They have already given him his name. They talk to him, read to him, sing to him and have felt him move. Our granddaughter Madeline (9 years old) is the baby’s only first cousin on our side of the family. Over the Thanksgiving Holiday’s, Madeline had her face against Audra’s belly. She felt the baby move. She was so excited! Other than Blake and Audra, Madeline is the only other person to feel this little human move. She was telling everyone, “I felt him move, I felt him move!”
