The presence of God, even in small amounts can feel overwhelming. It's hard to imagine how the new king of Babylon feels in Daniel chapter 5 when the hand of God writes his prophecy concerning the king on the wall. It reminds us of several things: that God is worthy of our respect and reverence, and also that the time for repentance is now.
