Beeper & Zap: Birthday

Listen Later

In a cozy, two-story house by the sea, the salt breeze whispered through the windows. A boy lived there who was always buzzing with energy and a thirst for adventure. His name was Zap, and today was his eighth birthday.

Zap was the heart of his household. His older sister, a quiet bookworm with a gentle smile, often found herself caught up in her brother's schemes. His younger brother, a whirlwind of laughter and mischief, was his partner-in-crime. And their parents watched over them with love and patience, always ready with a warm hug.

But the most unique family member wasn't a sibling, or a parent. It was a quirky robot named Beeper, with a single, flashing eye and a knack for getting into trouble. Beeper was Zap's best friend and constant companion, and together they would explore the tide pools at the beach or build pillow forts in the living room.

This was the Wildcrest family.

The blare of Beeper's wake-up call was like a splash of cold Pacific salt spray. "Happy birthday to you," the little robot warbled, a bit off-key. "Happy birthday to you!"

Groaning, a hand reached out from under the covers to silence Beeper, who dodged away quickly. "It's six in the morning, Beeper. Go recharge or something."

But Beeper was already zipping around the room, his propellers whirring excitedly. "Come on, Zap, it's your birthday! I have a super-duper surprise for you!"

"A surprise? At six in the morning?" The covers remained firm and tight and cozy and warm.

But Beeper never gave up easily. The robot tugged gently to pull the blanket upward, his single eye flashing brightly into the little tent it created. "Beep beep boop! Special birthday waffles incoming!"

Waffles. At this hour? The idea was like a lighthouse in the fog of a sleepy Saturday morning. He considered the warmth, the fluffy dough, the sweet maple syrup... It was definitely a tempting alternative to hiding under the covers.

He lifted his head a little further. "Are they... Grandpa Jude's special waffles?"

Beeper's propeller whirred with delight. "And guess what? They're shaped like octopuses this morning!"

Octopus waffles? Zap couldn’t sleep through that. The prospect of those delicious, sea creature-shaped treats was too much to resist. Throwing back the covers in one swift motion, he launched himself out of bed. "You win, Beeper. Lead the way!"

Beeper’s little robot body zipped down the hallway and into the living room. Zap's parents were waiting there together, smiling. Grandpa Jude was behind them in the kitchen wearing an oversized chef’s hat. A large, oddly shaped present sat on the living room table, wrapped in shiny blue paper.

"Happy birthday, Zap!" Dad's eyes twinkled.

Mom wrapped Zap in a warm hug. "We're so excited for you to open it," she said, her voice filled with love and anticipation.

The paper made a satisfying ripping sound as Zap tore into it. He could see more and more - the sleek white hull, which curved smoothly towards the nose. The large, domed window that dominated the front, promising a panoramic view of the underwater world. He ran his fingers along the sides, feeling the tiny indentations that represented the ballast tanks, used for controlling buoyancy. A small fin ran along the back, and a red stripe along the side, just like the real thing. On top, there was a detailed conning tower, where the captain and crew would sit, and the robotic arm really worked, the same one that could collect specimens from the deepest parts of the ocean. Zap had pored over hours of videos and documentaries about this vessel. It wasn’t just any submarine, it was the most advanced research submarine ever created.

Zap ran his hand across the model submarine. "Dad,” he whispered, “It's the Nautilus X."

"That's right, champ.” They gave Zap a moment to take it in. He hefted it and felt the weight of it in his hands.

“Look, it’s a whale!” He ran around and around the room with his new model, chasing Beeper, who blipped and buzzed.

Grandpa waved a spatula at them threateningly. “Hey, stay out of the kitchen! Important chef duties!”

“Well, do you want to tell him?” asked dad.

“Tell me what?” Zap skidded on his socks.

“Zap,” said mom, “This little model is just a hint of what's to come. Your real birthday present..."

Beeper spun around and made a trumpet sound - “da da da dum.”

"...is a trip on the real Nautilus X to explore the Astoria Canyon!"

Zap's jaw dropped. "No way! Are you serious?"

"The Astoria Canyon," Mom was getting excited now, "That's where you and dad are headed. It's a deep underwater valley, teeming with life. Imagine, Zap – crystal-clear water, strange and colorful fish, maybe even a giant squid!"

The image filled Zap's head, and a shiver of excitement ran down his spine. Giant squid? In their natural habitat? This was going to be even more incredible than he could have ever imagined.

Zap remembered to place the model submarine down carefully, then leaped into his parents' arms. "This is the best birthday ever!"

Beeper chirped happily, whizzing around the room, his eye flashing a celebratory pattern. "I knew you'd love it! Beep, boop!"

As Zap hugged his parents, he remembered that mom was always concerned about his safety, especially when it came to his dad's underwater expeditions.

"And don't worry, Mom," Zap said, trying to sound reassuring. "I'll be extra super careful."

Mom smiled. Zap made a promise to himself to be cautious and responsible on this adventure, to prove to his mom that he could handle it. In the kitchen, Grandpa Jude was flipping the last octopus-shaped waffle onto a plate. “You know, Zap,” Grandpa Jude said, “when I was your age, I used to dream about diving deep into the ocean just like you. Our family's always had the ocean in our blood.”

He strode into the room, still wearing his apron and chef’s hat, carrying a plate of steaming waffles. “All right, enough with the sappiness. It’s breakfast time! Who wants to eat an octopus?”
