Non-musical history for today: 1865 – Union cavalry troopers cornered and shot dead John Wilkes Booth, assassin of President Abraham Lincoln, in Virginia. Booth and his “companion,” David Herold, made it nearly two weeks past Abe’s assassination. They were finally found at the Garrett Farm just outside of Port Royal. Herold surrendered when Lieutenant Edward P. Doherty, Lieutenant Colonel Everton Conger, and their troop finally cornered the perps, but Booth wanted to fight. The troops set the barn he was in on fire, and Sergeant Boston Corbett shot Booth, saying that Booth had raised his gun. There are conflicting accounts of this.
