Non-musical history for today: 1942 – Actress Hedy Lamarr and composer George Antheil received a patent for a Frequency-hopping spread-spectrum communication system that later became the basis for modern technologies in wireless telephones, two-way radio communications, and Wi-Fi. This early version of frequency hopping utilized a piano roll to switch among 88 frequencies, making radio-guided torpedoes harder for enemies to detect or jam. Lamarr and Antheil later donated the patent to the U.S. Navy.
Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for August 11.
Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza.
