Two non-musical history items for today: In 1170, Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, was assassinated inside Canterbury Cathedral by followers of King Henry II. He subsequently became a saint and martyr in the Anglican Communion and the Catholic Church. This, of course, was before the split of CoE and the Catholic Church.
1607 – According to John Smith, Pocahontas, daughter of Powhatan leader Wahunsenacawh, successfully pleaded for Smith's life after tribal leaders attempted to execute him. Now, some people dispute this as many suspect it was an adoption ceremony by which Smith was ritually accepted as subchief of the town of Capahosic in Powhatan's alliance.
