Non-musical history for today: 1661 – Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, was ritually executed more than two years after his death, on the 12th anniversary of the execution of the monarch he deposed. The bodies of Cromwell and his cronies were exhumed, and three were hanged for a day at Tyburn and then beheaded. The three bodies were then thrown into a pit close to the gallows, while the heads were placed, with then-court president John Bradshaw's in the middle, at the end of Westminster Hall (the symbolism was lost on no one as that was the building where the trial of Charles I had taken place). Cromwell's head wasn't reburied until 1960. Gross!
