Non-musical history for today: 1775 – American Revolutionary War: Patrick Henry delivered his speech – “Give me liberty or give me death!” – at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Richmond, Virginia. This was Henry trying to persuade the Virginian powers-that-be to send troops for the Revolution. Now, while no one is questioning that Patrick Henry actually gave this speech, there is debate as to whether the biographer William Wirt, who reconstructed the speech in this book, Sketches of the Life and Character of Patrick Henry, took “liberty” (see what I did there?) in fabricating that closing line.
Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for March 23.
Recorded in the Omniverus Podcast Studios at Liberty Plaza.
