Non-musical history for today: 1930 – The Motion Picture Production Code was instituted, imposing strict guidelines on the treatment of sex, crime, religion, and violence in film, in the U.S., for the next thirty-eight years. It was also commonly called the Hays Code after William H. Hays, Sr., who was the Head A-Hole in Charge of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA) from 1922 to 1945. Folks, this is censorship. It has no place in society. Now, thankfully, the MPAA rating system came along in 1968, and while it is somewhat better than the Hays Code, it can be useful if it sticks to its parental guidance standards. But when it also censors, then it sucks almost as badly. Luckily, films now can opt out of being rated altogether, and directors, producers, and film companies have started circumventing the sometimes political BS of the MPAA.
Music history, album anniversaries, birthdays, and deaths for March 31.
